Posted by In July 2003 NOAA established the National Center for Research on Aquatic Invasive Species (NCRAIS) in an effort to continue researching, understanding, preventing, responding to and managing aquatic species invasions in US Coastal ecosystems. The mission of NCRAIS is to ensure cross-NOAA leadership, communication, and coordination of aquatic species invasions in U.S. waterways. Currently there are over 180 non-indigenous species that have been reported to have reproducing populations in the Great Lakes basins, including Eurasian watermilfoil, zebra mussels and the round goby. Two recent invasive aquatic species that have been reported and verified in the Great Lakes basin were viral hemorrahagic septicemia (VHS) and Hemimysis anomala.
