Hope for Hemlocks: Biocontrols, Volunteers, and Tips for Landowners

Hemlock woolly adelgid (HWA) is an invasive insect whose presence has been confirmed throughout the southeastern Adirondacks. Every winter, APIPP’s Forest Pest Hunter volunteers adopt trails to monitor for and report HWA, but that isn’t all that’s being done to protect Adirondack forests from this forest pest. Join Nick Dietschler, Forest Health Researcher with New York State Hemlock Initiative at Cornell University and Ari Giller-Leinwohl, APIPP’s Invasive Species Manager, for a discussion on biological controls that are being released to control HWA in the Adirondacks, HWA control options for landowners, and how to identify and report HWA through APIPP’s volunteer Forest Pest Hunters program.
